"Khalid is a sword from the swords of Allah."— Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Sahih al-Bukhari 4262)
Biography
Khalid ibn al-Walid (رضي الله عنه) was born around 592 CE into the Makhzum clan of Quraysh, known for producing warriors. He was trained in warfare from a young age and became one of the most skilled cavalry commanders in Arabia.
Before accepting Islam, Khalid was responsible for the Muslim defeat at the Battle of Uhud, where his tactical flanking maneuver turned the tide of battle. He accepted Islam in 629 CE, coming to Madinah with Amr ibn al-As and Uthman ibn Talha.
After his conversion, the Prophet ﷺ gave him the title "Sayfullah" (Sword of Allah) following the Battle of Mu'tah, where Khalid took command after all three appointed commanders were martyred and managed a tactical withdrawal that preserved the Muslim army.
Khalid became the most successful military commander in Islamic history, never losing a single battle as a Muslim. He played a crucial role in the Ridda Wars under Abu Bakr, defeating false prophets and rebellious tribes. Under Umar, he conquered the Persian Empire and large portions of the Byzantine Empire, including the legendary battles of Yarmuk and the fall of Damascus.
Despite his military genius, Caliph Umar eventually removed him from command to prevent people from attributing victory to Khalid rather than Allah. Khalid accepted this with dignity and continued fighting as a regular soldier.
He passed away around 642 CE in Homs, Syria, reportedly lamenting that he died in his bed rather than as a martyr in battle. He is buried in Homs.
