Prophecy 1Historical

The Roman Victory

نصر الروم

In 615 CE, the Byzantine Romans suffered a crushing defeat by the Persian Empire. At this time, the Quran made an astonishing prophecy: the Romans would soon be victorious. This seemed impossible to the pagans of Makkah, yet it came true exactly as foretold.

🕌Historical Context

This prophecy was revealed at a time when Muslims were weak and persecuted in Makkah. The pagan Quraysh mocked this prophecy as impossible, since the Persians were at the height of their power. The fulfillment of this prophecy strengthened the faith of believers and proved the divine origin of the Quran.

📜The Prophecy

The Romans have been defeated in the nearest land. But they, after their defeat, will overcome within three to nine years. To Allah belongs the command before and after. And that day the believers will rejoice in the victory of Allah. He gives victory to whom He wills, and He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.

— Surah Ar-RumAyah 2-5

The Fulfillment

In 615 CE, the Persian Sassanid Empire defeated the Byzantine Romans and conquered Jerusalem, taking the True Cross as a war trophy.

The Quran predicted that within "bid' sineen" (3-9 years), the Romans would be victorious again.

In 624 CE, exactly within the prophesied timeframe, the Byzantine Emperor Heraclius achieved a decisive victory over the Persians at the Battle of Issus.

By 628 CE, the Romans had completely defeated the Persians, fulfilling the prophecy. The True Cross was returned to Jerusalem in 630 CE.

The prophecy was so precise that Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه) made a public bet with the Quraysh pagans about its fulfillment - a bet he won.

Key Points

  • Prophecy made when Roman defeat seemed permanent
  • Specific timeframe given (3-9 years)
  • Fulfilled exactly as predicted
  • Confirmed by historical records
  • Led to increased faith and conversions

📚Scholarly Notes

  • The Arabic term "bid' sineen" specifically means 3-9 years, and the fulfillment occurred within this exact timeframe.
  • This prophecy is mentioned in historical accounts by Byzantine historians, confirming the accuracy of the Quranic timeline.
  • Ibn Kathir records that this prophecy led to the conversion of many people who witnessed its fulfillment.
Prophecy 2Historical

The Conquest of Constantinople

فتح القسطنطينية

Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) prophesied the conquest of Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul) over 800 years before it actually happened. This prophecy was fulfilled in 1453 CE by Sultan Mehmed II, known as Mehmed the Conqueror.

🕌Historical Context

Constantinople was the capital of the Byzantine Empire and one of the most fortified cities in history. Its conquest marked the end of the Byzantine Empire and the beginning of the Ottoman dominance. The prophecy motivated Muslim leaders for centuries to strive for this achievement.

📜The Prophecy

Musnad Ahmad#18859Sahih

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As

Verily you shall conquer Constantinople. What a wonderful leader will that leader be, and what a wonderful army will that army be!

The Fulfillment

Constantinople was considered impregnable, with massive walls that had withstood numerous sieges for over 1,000 years.

Many Muslim leaders attempted to conquer it over the centuries, including companions of the Prophet and Umayyad caliphs, but all failed.

In 1453 CE, Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II (age 21) successfully conquered Constantinople after a 53-day siege.

The conquest was achieved through innovative military tactics, including the use of massive cannons and transporting ships overland.

The prophecy praised both the leader and the army - Mehmed II is remembered as one of the greatest Muslim leaders, and his army was indeed extraordinary.

Key Points

  • Prophecy made 800+ years before fulfillment
  • Predicted despite city being "unconquerable"
  • Multiple attempts over centuries
  • Fulfilled by Sultan Mehmed II in 1453 CE
  • Praised both the leader and army accurately

📚Scholarly Notes

  • Imam Al-Hakim authenticated this hadith in his work "Al-Mustadrak."
  • Numerous companions attempted to fulfill this prophecy, showing their strong belief in it.
  • The conquest is considered one of the most significant events in Islamic history.
Prophecy 3Historical

Preservation of the Quran

حفظ القرآن

Unlike any other scripture, the Quran contains a divine promise of its own preservation. For over 1,400 years, not a single letter has changed - a miraculous fulfillment of this prophecy that continues to this day.

🕌Historical Context

At the time of this prophecy, scriptures like the Bible had already undergone changes and had multiple versions. The promise that the Quran would be preserved was unprecedented and seemed difficult to guarantee, especially for a book revealed over 23 years in a largely oral culture.

📜The Prophecy

إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا الذِّكْرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُ لَحَافِظُونَ

Indeed, it is We who sent down the Quran and indeed, We will be its guardian.

— Surah Al-HijrAyah 9

The Fulfillment

Every copy of the Quran in the world, whether in Arabic or transliteration, contains the exact same text - verified by comparing manuscripts from different eras and regions.

The Quran was preserved through both written form and oral memorization (huffaz). Today, over 10 million people have memorized the entire Quran word-for-word.

Ancient manuscripts dating back to the time of the Prophet (ﷺ) and his companions match modern copies exactly, including the Birmingham Quran manuscript dated to 568-645 CE.

The chain of transmission (isnad) for the Quran is unbroken, with each generation teaching the next with precision.

Unlike other religious texts that have multiple versions and translations with significant differences, the Quran has remained unchanged in its original language.

Key Points

  • Divine promise of preservation
  • No changes in 1,400+ years
  • Verified by ancient manuscripts
  • Millions have memorized it completely
  • Unprecedented among religious texts

📚Scholarly Notes

  • Western scholars acknowledge the remarkable preservation of the Quran, with many calling it the most reliably transmitted ancient text.
  • The Quran's preservation was achieved through a sophisticated system of oral and written transmission with built-in error-checking mechanisms.
  • Modern DNA analysis and carbon dating of ancient Quranic manuscripts confirm their age and authenticity.

The Spread of Islam

انتشار الإسلام

During times of severe persecution in Makkah, when Muslims were few and weak, the Prophet (ﷺ) prophesied that Islam would spread throughout the world. This seemed impossible then, but today Islam is the world's fastest-growing religion with nearly 2 billion followers.

🕌Historical Context

This prophecy was made when Muslims were a persecuted minority in Makkah, numbering fewer than 100 people. The idea that their message would reach every corner of the earth seemed absurd to their opponents.

📜The Prophecy

Musnad Ahmad#16998Sahih

Narrated by Tamim al-Dari

Musnad of the Ansari|Hadith of Tamim al-Dari

This matter (Islam) will reach everywhere that night and day reach, and Allah will not leave a house of mud or hair except that Allah will cause this religion to enter it, bringing honor to some and humiliation to others - honor with which Allah honors Islam and humiliation with which Allah humiliates disbelief.

The Fulfillment

Islam spread from Arabia to Spain in the West and China in the East within a century of the Prophet's death.

Today, Islam is practiced in every country on Earth, with significant populations on every continent.

Islam is currently the fastest-growing major religion in the world, with projections showing it will be the largest religion by 2070.

The prophecy mentioned "houses of mud and hair" (referring to all types of dwellings) - today Islam has reached from palaces to remote villages.

Despite facing numerous obstacles throughout history, Islam has continued to spread organically through both nobility accepting it (honor) and through conquest (humiliation of disbelief).

Key Points

  • Prophecy made when Muslims were weak and few
  • Predicted global reach
  • Islam now in every country
  • Fastest-growing major religion
  • Fulfilled through multiple means

📚Scholarly Notes

  • Historian Gibbon acknowledged that Islam's spread was one of the most remarkable phenomena in human history.
  • Unlike many religions that spread primarily through colonialism, Islam spread through various means including trade, scholarship, and exemplary character.
  • The prophecy accurately predicted both peaceful spread (honor) and conquests (humiliation).

Barefoot Bedouins Building Tall Buildings

تطاول البنيان

One of the signs of the Last Day mentioned by the Prophet (ﷺ) was that barefoot, poor Bedouin shepherds would compete in constructing tall buildings. This seemed impossible in the 7th century, yet we see its fulfillment in the modern Gulf states.

🕌Historical Context

In the 7th century, the Arabian Peninsula had no tradition of multi-story buildings. The Bedouins were among the poorest people, living in tents made of animal hair. The idea that they would someday compete in building the tallest structures would have seemed absurd.

📜The Prophecy

Sahih al-Bukhari#50Sahih

Narrated by Abu Huraira

Book of Faith|What is Faith

The Hour will not be established until [...] you see the barefoot, naked, destitute shepherds competing in constructing tall buildings.

View on Sunnah.com

The Fulfillment

The Arabian Peninsula was inhabited by nomadic Bedouin tribes who lived in tents and herded animals, with no architectural tradition of tall buildings.

The discovery of oil in the 20th century transformed the Gulf states from poverty to immense wealth within a single generation.

Today, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar compete to build the world's tallest structures: Burj Khalifa (828m), various supertall towers, and planned mega-projects.

The descendants of Bedouin shepherds now own and commission these record-breaking skyscrapers.

The competition aspect is explicitly visible in announcements of new height records and architectural ambitions.

Key Points

  • Prophecy described impossible transformation
  • Bedouins were barefoot shepherds in tents
  • Oil wealth transformed Gulf states
  • Now compete for world's tallest buildings
  • Specific mention of competition fulfilled

📚Scholarly Notes

  • Classical scholars like Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani interpreted this as a sign of wealth coming to previously poor people.
  • Modern scholars note the specific mention of "competition" (yatatawaluna), which perfectly describes the skyscraper race in Gulf states.
  • Some scholars see this as indicating a reversal of values, where material competition supersedes spiritual growth.
Prophecy 6Historical

Abu Lahab's Eternal Rejection

كفر أبي لهب

The Quran boldly declared that Abu Lahab, one of the Prophet's fiercest enemies who was still alive, would never accept Islam and would die in disbelief. This was a risky prophecy - if Abu Lahab had simply pretended to convert, he could have disproven the Quran. Yet he never did.

🕌Historical Context

Abu Lahab was the Prophet Muhammad's uncle and one of his most vocal opponents. He would follow the Prophet in the streets, undermining his message and physically harming him. The revelation of this surah was a bold challenge: if the Quran were false, Abu Lahab could have destroyed its credibility with a simple false conversion.

📜The Prophecy

May the hands of Abu Lahab be ruined, and ruined is he. His wealth will not avail him or that which he gained. He will burn in a Fire of blazing flame. And his wife [as well] - the carrier of firewood. Around her neck is a rope of twisted fiber.

— Surah Al-MasadAyah 1-5

The Fulfillment

An entire chapter of the Quran was revealed declaring Abu Lahab would never believe and would enter Hellfire - while he was still alive and actively opposing Islam.

Abu Lahab lived for approximately 10 more years after this revelation, during which he could have easily disproven the Quran by simply pretending to convert to Islam.

Despite his intense hatred for Islam and desire to discredit Muhammad (ﷺ), Abu Lahab never attempted to use this simple method to invalidate the Quran.

He died in 624 CE at the Battle of Badr, still a disbeliever, exactly as the Quran had prophesied.

His wife Umm Jameel also died as a disbeliever, fulfilling the prophecy about her as well.

Key Points

  • Public declaration while enemy was alive
  • Could have been easily disproven
  • Abu Lahab never attempted to refute it
  • Died as disbeliever as prophesied
  • Demonstrates divine knowledge

📚Scholarly Notes

  • This prophecy demonstrates Allah's complete knowledge of the future and His control over hearts.
  • Classical scholars use this as proof of the Quran's divine origin - no human would risk such a prophecy unless certain of its truth.
  • The fact that Abu Lahab never exploited this "weakness" is itself miraculous, as he had every motivation to do so.
Prophecy 7Historical

Victory Over Persia

فتح فارس

When Muslims were weak and persecuted, the Prophet (ﷺ) prophesied that they would conquer the mighty Persian Empire and take the treasures of their emperor. This seemed impossible, yet it was fulfilled exactly as foretold.

🕌Historical Context

The prophecy was made during a time when Muslims were facing existential threats and had limited resources. The Persian Empire was at its peak, having just defeated the Byzantine Romans. The conquest of Persia seemed impossible.

📜The Prophecy

Sahih al-Bukhari#3120Sahih

Narrated by Abu Huraira

Book of Military Expeditions|The Prophet's expedition to Tabuk

When Khusrau (the Persian emperor) is destroyed, there will be no Khusrau after him; and when Caesar is destroyed, there will be no Caesar after him. By Him in Whose Hand is my soul, their treasures will be spent in Allah's cause.

The Fulfillment

The Sassanid Persian Empire was one of the two superpowers of the time, having defeated the Romans and ruling vast territories from India to Egypt.

During the Prophet's lifetime, the idea that the small Muslim community could defeat Persia seemed absurd.

In 636 CE, just 4 years after the Prophet's death, Muslims defeated the Persians at the Battle of Qadisiyyah.

By 651 CE, the entire Persian Empire had fallen to Muslim forces, and the last Persian emperor Yazdegerd III was killed.

The treasures of the Persian kings, including the famous Crown of Khusrau and other royal regalia, were brought to Madinah and distributed as the Prophet had prophesied.

There has never been another "Khusrau" (Persian emperor) since, exactly as prophesied.

Key Points

  • Prophecy made when Muslims were weak
  • Persia was a superpower
  • Complete conquest within 20 years
  • Treasures distributed as prophesied
  • No Persian emperor since

📚Scholarly Notes

  • Umar ibn al-Khattab (رضي الله عنه) wept when he saw the Persian treasures, remembering the Prophet's prophecy and its fulfillment.
  • The fall of the Sassanid Empire marked the end of ancient Persian civilization and the beginning of Islamic Persia.
  • Historians acknowledge the Muslim conquest of Persia as one of the most surprising military achievements in history.
Prophecy 8Historical

Return to Makkah

العودة إلى مكة

When the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) was forced to flee Makkah under threat of death, Allah revealed that he would return to his hometown. At that moment of exile and danger, this seemed unlikely, yet it was fulfilled within 8 years.

🕌Historical Context

The Prophet (ﷺ) was born in Makkah and spent 53 years of his life there. When he was forced to flee due to persecution and death threats, it seemed unlikely he would ever return. The Quraysh were powerful and determined to prevent his return at all costs.

📜The Prophecy

إِنَّ الَّذِي فَرَضَ عَلَيْكَ الْقُرْآنَ لَرَادُّكَ إِلَىٰ مَعَادٍ

Indeed, He who imposed upon you the Quran will surely restore you to a place of return.

— Surah Al-QasasAyah 85

The Fulfillment

This verse was revealed as the Prophet (ﷺ) was fleeing Makkah during the Hijrah (migration) to Madinah, with assassins pursuing him.

The pagans of Makkah had sworn that Muhammad (ﷺ) would never return to their city alive.

In 630 CE, just 8 years after the migration, the Prophet (ﷺ) returned to Makkah at the head of 10,000 Muslims in the Conquest of Makkah.

He entered peacefully and magnanimously forgave those who had persecuted him and forced him to flee.

The prophecy was fulfilled not just as a visit, but as a triumphant conquest where Makkah became the spiritual center of Islam.

Key Points

  • Prophecy during flight from death
  • Return seemed impossible
  • Fulfilled within 8 years
  • Returned as victorious leader
  • Peaceful conquest of hometown

📚Scholarly Notes

  • The term "ma'ad" (place of return) in Arabic can mean both a physical and spiritual return, both of which were fulfilled.
  • Ibn Abbas and other early scholars confirmed this verse referred to the conquest of Makkah.
  • This prophecy gave hope to the early Muslims during their most difficult period of persecution.
