Prophetic Signs of Muhammad ﷺ

The Splitting of the Moon
انشقاق القمر
Among the most extraordinary miracles witnessed during the lifetime of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was the splitting of the moon. This occurred when the polytheists of Makkah demanded a clear sign from him. The moon split into two distinct parts, visible to all present, and then rejoined. This event is referenced directly in the Quran and documented in authentic hadith.
اقْتَرَبَتِ السَّاعَةُ وَانشَقَّ الْقَمَرُ
“The Hour has drawn near and the moon has split.”
The Event

The splitting of the moon occurred in Makkah before the migration to Madinah. The disbelievers had challenged the Prophet ﷺ to show them a miracle, and Allah responded by splitting the moon into two parts. The people of Makkah witnessed this extraordinary event with their own eyes. However, despite this clear sign, many refused to believe and accused the Prophet ﷺ of sorcery.
وَإِن يَرَوْا آيَةً يُعْرِضُوا وَيَقُولُوا سِحْرٌ مُّسْتَمِرٌّ
“And if they see a sign, they turn away and say, "Continuing magic."”

“Exalted is He who took His Servant by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al-Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs.”
The Journey to Jerusalem

The Prophet ﷺ was transported from Makkah to Jerusalem on the Buraq, a heavenly mount. At Masjid al-Aqsa, he led all the prophets in prayer, demonstrating his position as the final messenger. This journey occurred during one of the most difficult periods of the Prophet's life, following the Year of Sorrow when he lost his beloved wife Khadijah and his uncle Abu Talib.

Water Flowing from His Fingers

On multiple occasions, water miraculously flowed from between the blessed fingers of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, providing abundant water for hundreds of thirsty companions. This miracle occurred during times of great need and was witnessed by large numbers of the companions.
Water for the Army at Hudaybiyyah
ماء الجيش في الحديبية
During the expedition to Hudaybiyyah, the companions complained of thirst. The Prophet ﷺ placed his hand in a small vessel of water, and water began flowing from between his fingers like springs. All fifteen hundred companions drank from this water and performed ablution, yet the water level in the vessel did not decrease.

“The people complained of thirst, so the Prophet ﷺ took out a vessel and put his hand in it. Water started flowing from between his fingers, and all the people drank and performed ablution.”

Multiplication of Food

Feeding the Army from Little Food
إطعام الجيش من قليل الطعام
During the Battle of the Trench (Khandaq), the companions were suffering from severe hunger. Jabir ibn Abdullah prepared a small amount of food from a young goat and a small measure of barley. The Prophet ﷺ invited all one thousand companions to eat from this small amount. Everyone ate until they were full, and the food remained in the pot and the dough remained in the kneading trough as it was before.

“Jabir said: "We were digging the trench when a very hard rock appeared. They went to the Prophet ﷺ and said, 'There is a rock appearing in the trench.' The Prophet ﷺ struck it three times, and it broke into pieces."”

The Crying Tree Trunk

In one of the most moving miracles, a tree trunk in the Prophet's mosque began to cry audibly when the Prophet ﷺ moved away from it to use a newly constructed pulpit. This demonstrated the deep spiritual reality that even inanimate objects recognized the Prophet's blessed presence.
The Longing of the Trunk
شوق الجذع
The Prophet ﷺ used to lean against a date palm trunk when delivering sermons. When a pulpit was built for him, he used it instead, and the trunk began to cry loudly like a camel. The Prophet ﷺ came down from the pulpit and placed his hand on the trunk to console it, and it became quiet. He said it was crying because of the remembrance of Allah it used to hear.
Narrated by Jabir ibn Abdullah
“The Prophet ﷺ used to stand by a tree or a date-palm on Friday. Then an Ansari woman said, "Shall I make a pulpit for you?" He replied, "If you wish." So she made a pulpit for him and when it was Friday, he proceeded towards the pulpit. The date-palm cried like a child! The Prophet ﷺ descended and embraced it while it continued moaning like a child being quietened.”

Healing the Sick

Healing Ali's Eyes at Khaybar
شفاء عين علي في خيبر
During the Battle of Khaybar, Ali ibn Abi Talib was suffering from severe eye pain (ophthalmia). The Prophet ﷺ said he would give the banner to someone whom Allah and His Messenger love. He called for Ali, applied his saliva to Ali's eyes while making supplication, and Ali was immediately cured. He had no further problems with his eyes after that.
Narrated by Sahl ibn Sa'd
“The Prophet ﷺ said, "Tomorrow I will give the flag to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and Allah will grant victory at his hands." The next day he called Ali, who was suffering from eye trouble. The Prophet ﷺ applied his saliva to Ali's eyes, and he was cured instantly.”

Divine Protection from Enemies

وَاللَّهُ يَعْصِمُكَ مِنَ النَّاسِ
“And Allah will protect you from the people.”
Concealment in the Cave of Thawr
الإخفاء في غار ثور
During the migration to Madinah, the Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr hid in the Cave of Thawr while the Quraysh were actively searching for them. A spider miraculously wove a web over the entrance, and a dove built a nest there, making it appear as though no one had entered for a long time. The pursuers passed by without checking inside.
إِذْ يَقُولُ لِصَاحِبِهِ لَا تَحْزَنْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ مَعَنَا
“When he said to his companion, "Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us."”

The Complaining Camel
شكوى الجمل
A camel approached the Prophet ﷺ with tears in its eyes and made sounds of complaint. The Prophet ﷺ understood that the camel was complaining about its owner who overworked it and underfed it. The Prophet ﷺ then called the owner and advised him to treat the animal with kindness, demonstrating the rights of animals in Islam.
Narrated by Abdullah ibn Ja'far
“A camel came to the Prophet ﷺ and prostrated to him. The companions said, "O Messenger of Allah, animals prostrate to you; we have more right to prostrate to you." He replied, "Worship your Lord and honor your brother."”
