Gender Determined by Male Sperm
The Quran attributes gender to the male sperm alone - confirmed by 1905 discovery that the father's X or Y chromosome determines sex.
The Quranic Verse
وَأَنَّهُ خَلَقَ الزَّوْجَيْنِ الذَّكَرَ وَالْأُنثَىٰ مِن نُّطْفَةٍ إِذَا تُمْنَىٰ
Wa annahu khalaqaz-zawjayni adh-dhakara wal-unthā min nuṭfatin idhā tumnā
“And that He creates the two mates - the male and female - from a sperm-drop when it is emitted.”
Other Translations
Yusuf Ali:
That He did create in pairs - male and female, from a seed when lodged (in its place).
Abdul Haleem:
And that He creates the two sexes, male and female, from an ejected drop of sperm.

Phenomenon
Sex Determination by Male Chromosomes
Discoverer
Nettie Stevens / Edmund Wilson
Year Discovered

Modern genetics confirms that the sex of a child is determined SOLELY by the father's sperm, not by the mother or by environmental factors as ancient theories proposed. The Science: - Women have XX chromosomes and can ONLY contribute an X chromosome - Men have XY chromosomes and contribute either X (girl) or Y (boy) - The sperm that fertilizes the egg determines the child's sex - If X-bearing sperm fertilizes: XX = female - If Y-bearing sperm fertilizes: XY = male The Quran specifically states that male and female genders come "from a sperm-drop when it is emitted" (مِن نُّطْفَةٍ إِذَا تُمْنَىٰ) - accurately attributing sex determination to the male emission alone.

Historical Context
What Was Believed in Ancient Times
Ancient theories on sex determination were fundamentally wrong and contradicted the Quranic statement:
Ancient Sources
- • Aristotle, "Generation of Animals" - gender determined by heat/cold balance, male provides form, female provides matter
- • Hippocrates - BOTH parents produce "semen," the stronger one determines sex
- • Galen - BOTH parents contribute seed, the side of the uterus (left/right) determines gender
Dominant Theory Before Discovery
Before the discovery of sex chromosomes in 1905, the scientific consensus followed variations of ancient Greek theories: either both parents contributed equally to sex determination, or environmental factors (heat, position, timing) decided gender. The idea that ONLY the father determined sex was not accepted.
Key Misconceptions (All Wrong)
- Both parents equally determine the child's sex (Hippocratic/Galenic view)
- Heat or cold during conception determines gender (Aristotelian view)
- The side of the uterus (left/right) determines sex (Galenic view)
- Diet or timing of intercourse can determine gender
- The mother's contribution is equally important for sex determination
- Environmental factors during pregnancy affect gender
The Paradigm Shift
Nettie Stevens and Edmund Wilson's discovery of sex chromosomes in 1905 revolutionized our understanding. They proved that males have XY chromosomes and females have XX. Since mothers can only contribute X, and fathers contribute either X or Y, the father's sperm ALONE determines the child's sex - exactly as the Quran stated 1,300 years earlier.

“These Hadiths could not have been obtained on the basis of the scientific knowledge that was available at the time of the writer... It follows that not only is there no conflict between genetics and religion (Islam) but in fact religion (Islam) may guide science by adding revelation to some of the traditional scientific approaches.”

Detailed Analysis
The Quran explicitly states that both genders - male and female - are created "from a sperm-drop when it is emitted." This directly contradicts all ancient theories which attributed sex determination to both parents, environmental factors, or the mother's contribution. Ancient Theories (All Wrong): - Aristotle: Gender determined by heat - hotter = male, cooler = female - Hippocrates: Both parents produce "semen," the stronger one wins - Galen: Both parents contribute, but the side of the uterus (left = female, right = male) decides What the Quran Says: The verse specifically links gender creation to "nuṭfah" (sperm-drop) "when it is emitted" (إِذَا تُمْنَىٰ) - the male emission. The mother's contribution is not mentioned in the context of sex determination. Modern Science Confirms: The discovery of sex chromosomes (1905) proved the Quran correct. The mother always contributes an X chromosome. The father contributes either X (resulting in a female XX) or Y (resulting in a male XY). The father's sperm ALONE determines the child's sex.
