The Quranic Verse

Qul laʾini ijtamaʿati al-insu wal-jinnu ʿalā an yaʾtū bimithli hādhā al-qurʾāni lā yaʾtūna bimithlihi walaw kāna baʿḍuhum libaʿḍin ẓahīran

Say, "If mankind and the jinn gathered in order to produce the like of this Quran, they could not produce the like of it, even if they were to each other assistants."

— Surah Al-IsraAyah 88

Other Translations

Yusuf Ali:

Say: "If the whole of mankind and Jinns were to gather together to produce the like of this Quran, they could not produce the like thereof, even if they backed up each other with help and support."

Abdul Haleem:

Say, "Even if all mankind and jinn came together to produce something like this Quran, they could not produce anything like it, however much they helped each other."

610 CE onwards

The Quran's linguistic miracle operates on multiple levels that have been studied for 1,400 years: 1. Neither Poetry Nor Prose: Arabic literature is divided into poetry (shi'r) and prose (nathr). The Quran is neither - it is a unique genre unto itself. Expert Arab linguists immediately recognized this unprecedented form. 2. Rhetorical Features (Balagha): The Quran employs: - Perfect word selection (every word irreplaceable) - Optimal sentence structure - Layered meanings in minimal text - Seamless transitions between topics - Mathematical patterns in letters and words 3. The Challenge (Tahaddi): The Quran progressively challenged Arabs to produce: - A book like it (52:34) - Ten chapters like it (11:13) - One chapter like it (2:23, 10:38) No one has succeeded in 1,400 years despite the Arabs' pride in their linguistic mastery. 4. Testimony of Non-Muslims: Even orientalists and Christian scholars have acknowledged the Quran's unique literary qualities (A.J. Arberry, Rev. Bosworth Smith, Thomas Carlyle). 5. Authorship Miracle: The Quran - 114 chapters, 6,236 verses - was produced by one unlettered man. By comparison, the Bible's 66 books were written by 40 different authors.

Historical Context

What Was Believed in Ancient Times

Pre-Islamic Arabs were masters of eloquence. Poetry was their highest art form. They held annual poetry competitions at Ukaz. They boasted of having 100 synonyms for "sword" and 100 for "horse" while other nations had only a few.

Ancient Sources

  • The Mu'allaqat (Suspended Odes) - Pre-Islamic poetry hung on the Kaaba
  • Al-Asma'i, "Kitab al-Ibil" (Book of Camels) - Documenting Arabic vocabulary richness

Dominant Theory Before Discovery

Pre-Islamic Arabs had no concept of a text that could be neither poetry nor prose yet surpass both. They expected any claimed revelation to fit existing literary categories.

Key Misconceptions (All Wrong)

  • The Quran is a form of poetry (it is not - no rhyme scheme, meter varies)
  • The Quran is prose (it is not - too rhythmic, too structured)
  • Any skilled poet could replicate it (none have in 1,400 years)
  • Its beauty is merely subjective appreciation

The Paradigm Shift

The Quran created a new literary category. Its challenge remains open after 1,400 years. Modern computational linguistics and AI have attempted analysis but cannot replicate its unique properties.

Expert Testimonials

Whenever I hear the Quran chanted, it is as though I am listening to music. Underneath the flowing melody there is sounding all the time the insistent beat of a drum - it is like the beating of my heart.

A.J. Arberry

Arabic Studies, Cambridge University (1955)

It is a poem, a code of laws, a book of common prayers, and a Bible all in one, and is reverenced by a sixth of the whole human race as a miracle of purity of style, of wisdom, and of Truth.

Rev. Bosworth Smith

A poor shepherd people, roaming unnoticed in the deserts since the creation of the world... within one century afterwards, Arabia is at Granada on this hand, at Delhi on that, glancing in valor and splendor.

Thomas Carlyle

Philosophy/History, Edinburgh University (1840)

The Arabs were boasting about their eloquence. They would ask: how many words do you have for horse? Maybe six? We have a hundred! Among such a people, Allah sent the greatest miracle - the Quran - in their own language. And they realized: this is not poetry, this is not prose, this is something beyond our understanding.

Detailed Analysis

The Quran stands as a unique literary phenomenon - the only book in history to openly challenge humanity to produce its like, with that challenge unmet for over 1,400 years. The Context of the Miracle: The 7th-century Arabs were masters of language. Poetry was their highest art. They had: - 100 synonyms for "sword" - 100 synonyms for "horse" - Annual poetry competitions at Ukaz - Poets who were tribal celebrities Among such a people, Allah sent Prophet Muhammad ﷺ - an unlettered man who couldn't read or write - with a Book that defeated them at their own game. What Makes It Miraculous: 1. Unique Genre: The Quran is neither poetry (shi'r) nor prose (nathr). Arabic scholars immediately recognized this new category that transcends both. 2. Unmet Challenge: The Quran progressively challenged the Arabs: - Produce a book like it → None could - Produce 10 chapters → None could - Produce ONE chapter → None could 3. One-Man Production: The Quran's 114 chapters, 6,236 verses came from one man who couldn't write. The Bible's 66 books required 40 different authors. Even Paul, Christianity's most prolific writer, produced only 14 small books. 4. Non-Muslim Testimony: - A.J. Arberry (Cambridge): "Like listening to music... the beating of my heart" - Rev. Bosworth Smith: "A miracle of purity of style, of wisdom, and of Truth" - Thomas Carlyle: Described how this book transformed "poor shepherd people" into rulers from Granada to Delhi The Living Miracle: Unlike the miracles of previous prophets (Moses's staff, Jesus's healing), the Quran remains. You can verify it today. Its challenge stands open. In the age of AI and computational linguistics, the challenge is more relevant than ever - and still unmet.
