The story of prayer is intertwined with one of the most miraculous events in Islamic history - the Night Journey (Isra) and Ascension (Mi'raj). On this blessed night, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ traveled from Mecca to Jerusalem, then ascended through the seven heavens to receive the greatest gift: the five daily prayers directly from Allah.

Exalted is He who took His Servant by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al-Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing.

The Night Journey Begins

The Night Journey occurred during one of the most difficult periods in the Prophet's ﷺ life. It was the "Year of Sorrow" - he had lost his beloved wife Khadijah and his protective uncle Abu Talib. He had traveled to Ta'if seeking support, only to be rejected and stoned until he bled. In this moment of profound grief, Allah honored His beloved Messenger with a journey unlike any other. The angel Jibril came to him with Al-Buraq, a white riding beast larger than a donkey but smaller than a mule, whose stride reached as far as the eye could see.

Exalted is He who took His Servant by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al-Aqsa.

Leading the Prophets in Prayer

Upon arriving at Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ found all the prophets assembled waiting for him. In a moment of profound significance, he led them all in prayer - Ibrahim, Musa, Isa, and all the other prophets, peace be upon them all. This demonstrated his position as the seal of the prophets and the leader of all humanity. Jerusalem thus became the third holiest site in Islam, forever connecting it to this blessed night.

Sahih Muslim#162Sahih

Narrated by Anas ibn Malik

Then I entered the mosque (Al-Aqsa) and prayed two rak'ahs in it. Then I came out and Jibril brought me a vessel of wine and a vessel of milk. I chose the milk, and Jibril said: "You have chosen the natural way (fitrah)."

Sahih Muslim#172Sahih

Narrated by Abu Hurairah

The time for prayer came and I led them (the prophets) in prayer.

  • Prophet Muhammad ﷺ led them all in prayer
  • This established his position as the seal of prophets
  • Jerusalem became the third holiest site in Islam

Ascension Through the Seven Heavens

After the prayer in Jerusalem, Jibril ascended with the Prophet ﷺ through the seven heavens. At each heaven, they were asked who was there, and upon learning it was Muhammad, the gates were opened with joy. At each level, the Prophet ﷺ met a different prophet: Adam in the first heaven, Yahya and Isa in the second, Yusuf in the third, Idris in the fourth, Harun in the fifth, Musa in the sixth, and Ibrahim in the seventh. Each greeted him as a righteous brother and prophet, except Adam and Ibrahim who called him a righteous son.

And he certainly saw him in another descent, at the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary - near it is the Garden of Refuge.

— Surah An-NajmAyah 13-15
Sahih al-Bukhari#3887Sahih

Narrated by Anas ibn Malik

Then I was taken up until I reached Sidrat al-Muntaha (the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary). Its leaves were like elephant ears and its fruits were like clay jugs. When it was covered by the command of Allah, it changed, and none of Allah's creation could describe its beauty.

View on Sunnah.com

Key Points

  • The Prophet ﷺ ascended through all seven heavens
  • Each heaven was guarded and required permission to enter
  • He met a different prophet at each level
  • He reached Sidrat al-Muntaha, the highest point any creation has reached

The Divine Audience

Beyond Sidrat al-Muntaha, the Prophet ﷺ continued alone - even Jibril could not proceed further, saying "If I were to go one step further, I would be burnt." The Prophet ﷺ was brought so close to Allah that he was "at a distance of two bow-lengths or nearer." In this intimate audience with the Lord of the worlds, he received the gift that would become the pillar of Islam: the command to pray. This direct communication between Allah and His beloved servant demonstrates the immense status of prayer.

Then he approached and descended, and was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer. And he revealed to His Servant what he revealed.

— Surah An-NajmAyah 8-10

The heart did not lie about what it saw. So will you dispute with him over what he saw?

— Surah An-NajmAyah 11-12

Key Points

  • Even Jibril could not proceed beyond Sidrat al-Muntaha
  • The Prophet ﷺ was brought to a distance of "two bow-lengths or nearer"
  • This was direct communication with Allah
  • Prayer was given as a gift during this intimate meeting

The Gift of Prayer

Section 2
Illustration for The Gift of Prayer

Of all the commands in Islam, only the prayer was given directly from Allah to His Prophet ﷺ without any intermediary. It was not revealed through Jibril like other commands, but given face to face in the highest heavens. This unique method of revelation shows the supreme importance of prayer in the life of a Muslim.

Indeed, I am Allah. There is no deity except Me, so worship Me and establish prayer for My remembrance.

— Surah TahaAyah 14

The Initial Prescription: Fifty Prayers

When the Prophet ﷺ first received the command of prayer during the Mi'raj, Allah enjoined fifty prayers every day and night upon the Muslim ummah. This shows the immense value Allah places on this act of worship - He desired His servants to be in constant connection with Him throughout the day and night.

Sahih al-Bukhari#3887Sahih

Narrated by Anas ibn Malik

Then Allah revealed to me what He revealed, and He enjoined upon me fifty prayers every day and night.

Key Points

  • Prayer was initially prescribed as fifty daily prayers
  • This was given directly from Allah without an intermediary
  • It shows the immense value Allah places on prayer
  • The ummah would have been in constant connection with Allah

Musa's Advice

As the Prophet ﷺ descended from the divine audience, he passed by Musa (peace be upon him) in the sixth heaven. When Musa learned that fifty prayers had been prescribed, he advised the Prophet ﷺ based on his own experience with the Children of Israel: "Your ummah will not be able to bear that. Go back to your Lord and ask Him to reduce it." This began the famous back-and-forth that demonstrates both Allah's mercy and the concern the prophets have for this ummah.

Sahih al-Bukhari#3887Sahih

Narrated by Anas ibn Malik

I passed by Musa and he asked: "What has been enjoined upon you?" I said: "Fifty prayers every day." He said: "Your ummah will not be able to bear that. I have tested people before you and tried my utmost with the Children of Israel. Go back to your Lord and ask Him to reduce it for your ummah."

View on Sunnah.com

Key Points

  • Musa advised based on his experience with Bani Israel
  • He recognized the difficulty of maintaining many prayers
  • His advice showed brotherly concern for this ummah
  • The Prophet ﷺ trusted Musa's experience and returned to Allah

The Final Reduction: Five with the Reward of Fifty

The Prophet ﷺ went back and forth between Allah and Musa until the prayers were reduced from fifty to five. At this point, he felt too shy to ask for further reduction. Allah then declared: "They are five prayers every day and night, and for each prayer there is the reward of ten, so that makes fifty prayers." Thus, the Muslim ummah performs five prayers but receives the reward of fifty - a perfect balance of mercy and honor.

Sahih al-Bukhari#3887Sahih

Narrated by Anas ibn Malik

I went back and Allah reduced it until He said: "O Muhammad, they are five prayers every day and night. For each prayer there is the reward of ten, so that makes fifty prayers. Whoever intends to do a good deed and does not do it, one good deed will be recorded for him; if he does it, ten good deeds will be recorded for him. Whoever intends to do a bad deed and does not do it, nothing will be recorded against him; if he does it, one bad deed will be recorded against him."

Sahih Muslim#162Sahih

Narrated by Anas ibn Malik

I descended until I reached Musa and told him. He said: "Go back to your Lord and ask Him to reduce it further." I said: "I have asked my Lord until I am ashamed. I am content and submit." Then a caller called out: "I have established My ordinance and have reduced the burden on My servants."

Key Points

  • Prayers were reduced from 50 to 5
  • Each prayer carries the reward of 10 prayers
  • Five prayers give the reward of fifty
  • Allah's word does not change - the full reward is maintained

The Significance of This Gift

This story reveals several beautiful truths: Allah's immense mercy in reducing the burden while maintaining the reward, Musa's brotherly concern for the ummah of Muhammad ﷺ, and the supreme status of prayer as the only command given directly without an intermediary. Prayer is not just a ritual - it is a gift from the divine audience, a direct line of communication established in the highest heavens.

And establish prayer for My remembrance.

— Surah TahaAyah 14
Sunan an-Nasa'i#3940Sahih

Fajr is prayed in the quiet moments before sunrise, when the world is still and the connection with Allah feels most intimate. It consists of 2 rak'ahs of fard, preceded by 2 rak'ahs of emphasized sunnah. The Prophet ﷺ said the two rak'ahs of sunnah before Fajr are better than the world and everything in it. Praying Fajr in congregation is said to be equivalent to praying half the night.

Establish prayer at the decline of the sun until the darkness of the night and the Quran at dawn. Indeed, the recitation at dawn is ever witnessed.

— Surah Al-IsraAyah 78
Sahih Muslim#725Sahih

Narrated by Aisha

The two rak'ahs of Fajr are better than the world and everything in it.

Sahih Muslim#656Sahih

Narrated by Uthman ibn Affan

  • The sunnah of Fajr is "better than the world"
  • Angels witness the Fajr prayer
  • Praying in congregation equals half the night's reward

Dhuhr - The Noon Prayer

Dhuhr is prayed after the sun passes its zenith, when the heat of the day is at its peak. It consists of 4 rak'ahs of fard, with 4 rak'ahs of sunnah before and 2 after. The Prophet ﷺ advised delaying Dhuhr when the heat is intense, as the severity of heat is from the breath of Hellfire. This prayer serves as a midday reset, bringing the believer back to consciousness of Allah.

Maintain with care the [obligatory] prayers and [in particular] the middle prayer and stand before Allah, devoutly obedient.

— Surah Al-BaqarahAyah 238
Sahih al-Bukhari#536Sahih

Narrated by Abu Hurairah

When the heat becomes intense, delay the prayer until it becomes cooler, for the intensity of heat is from the breath of Hell.

Key Points

  • May be delayed when heat is extreme
  • The "middle prayer" according to many scholars
  • Breaks the worldly routine to remember Allah

Asr is prayed in the late afternoon when shadows lengthen. It consists of 4 rak'ahs of fard with no emphasized sunnah, though voluntary prayers before it are rewarded. This is the prayer specifically mentioned in the Quran as "the middle prayer" according to many scholars, and missing it is described with severe words by the Prophet ﷺ.

By time, indeed, mankind is in loss.

— Surah Al-AsrAyah 1-2

Narrated by Abu Hurairah

Angels come to you in succession by night and by day, and they all assemble at the time of Fajr and Asr prayers. Then those who have stayed with you overnight ascend and Allah asks them (though He knows better than they): "In what condition did you leave My servants?" They reply: "We left them while they were praying and we came to them while they were praying."

Key Points

Maghrib is prayed immediately after sunset, when the red disk of the sun has disappeared below the horizon. It consists of 3 rak'ahs of fard, followed by 2 rak'ahs of sunnah. The Prophet ﷺ emphasized not delaying this prayer, as its time is short. During Ramadan, this is when Muslims break their fast, making it a moment of special blessing.

Abu Dawud#418Sahih

Narrated by Abu Ayyub al-Ansari

My ummah will remain upon goodness as long as they do not delay Maghrib until the stars appear.

Key Points

  • 3 rak'ahs fard, 2 sunnah after

The Prophet ﷺ mentioned that if it were not difficult for his ummah, he would have commanded them to delay Isha. Praying Isha and Fajr in congregation is equivalent to praying the entire night.

Sahih Muslim#656Sahih

Narrated by Uthman ibn Affan

Whoever prays Isha in congregation, it is as if he has prayed half the night. And whoever prays Fajr in congregation, it is as if he has prayed the whole night.

Sahih al-Bukhari#566Sahih

Narrated by Abu Hurairah

Were it not that it would be too difficult for my ummah, I would have commanded them to delay the Isha prayer.

Beyond the five obligatory prayers, Islam encourages additional voluntary prayers (nawafil) that draw the servant closer to Allah and compensate for any deficiencies in the obligatory prayers. These prayers carry immense rewards and were beloved to the Prophet ﷺ, who never abandoned them even while traveling.

And from [part of] the night, pray with it as additional [worship] for you; it is expected that your Lord will resurrect you to a praised station.

Purification - Wudu (Ablution)

Before prayer, a Muslim must be in a state of ritual purity. Wudu (ablution) involves washing specific parts of the body in a prescribed manner. It begins with intention and the name of Allah, then includes washing the hands, rinsing the mouth and nose, washing the face, arms, wiping the head and ears, and washing the feet. Each step has authentic proofs from the Quran and Sunnah.

O you who have believed, when you rise to [perform] prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the ankles.

— Surah Al-Ma'idahAyah 6
Sahih al-Bukhari#631Sahih

How to Pray - Step by Step

Prayer consists of specific positions, recitations, and supplications performed in a particular order. Each movement and word is an act of worship with deep meaning.

The Spiritual Significance of Prayer

Section 6
Illustration for The Spiritual Significance of Prayer

Prayer is not merely a ritual obligation - it is the direct connection between the servant and the Lord, the pillar upon which the entire religion stands. It is the first act a Muslim will be questioned about on the Day of Judgment, and it distinguishes the believer from the disbeliever.

Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater.

— Surah Al-AnkabutAyah 45

The Second Pillar of Islam

Prayer is the second pillar of Islam, coming right after the testimony of faith. It is the practical manifestation of our belief in Allah. The Prophet ﷺ warned that it will be the first deed for which a person will be held accountable on the Day of Judgment. If the prayer is sound, all other deeds will be sound; if it is corrupt, all other deeds will be corrupt.

Sunan an-Nasa'i#465Sahih

Narrated by Abu Hurairah

The first thing for which a person will be brought to account on the Day of Resurrection will be his prayer. If it is sound, he will be successful, and if it is lacking, he will be a loser.

Jami' at-Tirmidhi#2621Sahih

Narrated by Buraidah

The covenant between us and them (the disbelievers) is prayer. Whoever abandons it has disbelieved.

Key Points

  • Prayer is the second pillar of Islam
  • First deed to be judged on Day of Resurrection
  • Sound prayer = sound deeds
  • Abandoning prayer is a grave matter

Direct Connection with Allah

Prayer is a direct conversation with Allah. In a beautiful Hadith Qudsi, Allah says He has divided the prayer (Al-Fatihah) between Himself and His servant. When the servant says "All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds," Allah responds: "My servant has praised Me." This continues throughout the recitation, making prayer a living dialogue with the Creator.

Sahih Muslim#395Sahih

Narrated by Abu Hurairah

Allah said: "I have divided the prayer between Myself and My servant into two halves, and My servant shall have what he has asked for." When the servant says "Al-hamdu lillahi Rabbi l-'alamin" (All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds), Allah says: "My servant has praised Me." When he says "Ar-Rahmani r-Rahim" (The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful), Allah says: "My servant has extolled Me." When he says "Maliki yawmi d-din" (Master of the Day of Judgment), Allah says: "My servant has glorified Me." When he says "Iyyaka na'budu wa iyyaka nasta'in" (You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help), Allah says: "This is between Me and My servant, and My servant shall have what he has asked for."

Key Points

  • Prayer is a direct conversation with Allah
  • Allah responds to every verse of Al-Fatihah
  • It is a living dialogue, not a monologue
  • The servant is guaranteed what he asks for

The Benefits of Prayer

Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing.

— Surah Al-AnkabutAyah 45
Sahih al-Bukhari#528Sahih

Narrated by Abu Hurairah
