Treatment of Prisoners
معاملة الأسرى
The Prophet ﷺ commanded kind treatment of prisoners, ensuring they were fed well and treated with dignity.
Context
After battles throughout the Madinan period
The Narrative
"Be kind to the prisoners," the Prophet ﷺ commanded after the Battle of Badr. After the battle, 70 Quraysh fighters were taken prisoner. The Prophet distributed them among companions and instructed: "Treat the prisoners well."
Abu Aziz ibn Umayr, one of the prisoners, reported: "I was among a group of Ansar when they brought me from Badr. When they had their lunch and dinner, they would give me bread and eat dates themselves, because of the Prophet's instruction to treat prisoners well."
Educational opportunities were provided as ransom. Since many Quraysh prisoners were literate while many Muslims were not, the Prophet accepted an arrangement where a prisoner could gain freedom by teaching ten Muslim children to read and write.
When Thumama ibn Uthal was captured, the Prophet visited him daily asking: "What do you have, Thumama?" After three days, the Prophet ordered his release without ransom. Amazed, Thumama immediately accepted Islam.
