First Friday Sermon in Madinah

أول خطبة جمعة في المدينة
Occasion
First Jumu'ah (Friday prayer) in Madinah
Location
Ranuna Valley, on the way to Madinah
Audience
The Ansar (Helpers of Madinah) and Muhajirun (Migrants from Makkah)
Historical Context

After fleeing persecution in Makkah and completing the arduous journey of Hijrah, the Prophet ﷺ stopped in the valley of Ranuna before entering Madinah. Here, the first official Friday prayer was established, marking the beginning of a new era for Islam - the transition from persecution to community building.

The Sermon

Praise be to Allah. I praise Him, I seek His help, and I ask for His forgiveness. I seek refuge in Allah from the evil of our souls and from the evil consequences of our deeds. Whomever Allah guides, none can lead astray, and whomever He leads astray, none can guide. I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah, Alone without any partners, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger. O people! Send forward for yourselves. You know, by Allah, that one of you will be struck down and will leave his flock without a shepherd. Then his Lord will say to him, without there being any interpreter or veil between them: "Did My messenger not come to you and convey the message? Did I not give you wealth and bestow My favors upon you?" What have you sent forward for yourself? Then he will look right and left and see nothing. Then he will look in front of him and see nothing but the Fire. So whoever can protect himself from the Fire, even by giving half a date in charity, let him do so. And if he cannot find that, then with a kind word, for indeed the reward of a good deed is multiplied by ten up to seven hundred times. Peace and blessings be upon you and the mercy of Allah.

The example of those who spend their wealth in the cause of Allah is that of a grain that sprouts into seven ears, each bearing one hundred grains. And Allah multiplies the reward even more to whoever He wills.

Scholarly Notes

This sermon established the format of Jumu'ah khutbah that continues to this day: beginning with praise of Allah, seeking refuge, bearing witness to His oneness and the Prophet's messengership, followed by exhortation. Classical scholars note that the Prophet ﷺ prioritized spiritual preparation and social responsibility from the very beginning of the Madinan period, even before addressing political or military matters.
