First Public Sermon at Mount Safa

أول خطبة علنية عند جبل الصفا
Occasion
Beginning of public dawah after three years of secret preaching
Location
Mount Safa, Makkah
Audience
The clans of Quraysh and residents of Makkah
Historical Context

After three years of calling people to Islam privately, Allah commanded the Prophet ﷺ to warn his close relatives and then to proclaim the message publicly. The Prophet climbed Mount Safa and called out to the various clans of Quraysh. This was the beginning of open confrontation with the idolatry of Makkah.

The Sermon

O people of Quraysh! (calling out clan by clan) O Banu Ka'b ibn Lu'ayy! O Banu Murrah ibn Ka'b! O Banu Abd Shams! O Banu Abd Manaf! O Banu Hashim! O Banu Abd al-Muttalib! When the people gathered, he said: If I told you that there was an army behind this mountain ready to attack you in the morning or evening, would you believe me? They said: "Yes, we have never experienced any lie from you!" He said: Then I am a warner to you in advance of a severe punishment. I cannot avail you anything before Allah. O Banu Abd Manaf! O Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib! O Safiyyah, aunt of the Messenger of Allah! O Fatimah bint Muhammad! Ask me for whatever you wish from my wealth, but I cannot avail you anything before Allah. Save yourselves from the Fire! For I cannot protect you from Allah in anything except that I will maintain the ties of kinship.
Arabic Excerpts
يا معشر قريش
أرأيتكم لو أخبرتكم أن خيلا بالوادي تريد أن تغير عليكم، أكنتم مصدقي؟
فإني نذير لكم بين يدي عذاب شديد

Scholarly Notes

This sermon marks the transition from private dawah to public proclamation. Classical scholars note the Prophet's pedagogical wisdom in using a hypothetical scenario to establish credibility before delivering the message. The fact that even his opponents acknowledged his truthfulness ("Al-Amin" - the trustworthy) gave weight to his warning. This sermon also established the Islamic principle that family ties, while important, do not override individual accountability before Allah.
