Quranic Evidence
“And whoever relies upon Allah - then He is sufficient for him.”
“And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who rely [upon Him].”
“And upon Allah let the believers rely.”
Prophetic Guidance
Narrated by Umar ibn al-Khattab
“If you were to rely upon Allah with true reliance, He would provide for you as He provides for the birds: they go out in the morning hungry and return in the evening full.”
Narrated by Anas ibn Malik
“Tie your camel and trust in Allah.”
Narrated by Anas ibn Malik
“Whoever says when leaving his house: "In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, there is no power nor might except with Allah," it will be said to him: "You have been guided, you have been sufficed, and you have been protected," and Satan will move away from him.”
Exemplary Stories
Trust in the Cave
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Abu Bakr
During the Hijrah, when the Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr were hiding in the Cave of Thawr with the Quraysh searching for them, Abu Bakr was worried. If the pursuers had looked down at their feet, they would have seen them. The Prophet ﷺ calmly reassured him: "What do you think of two when Allah is the third?" They had taken every precaution but ultimately relied on Allah's protection.
Lesson: True tawakkul combines taking necessary precautions with complete trust in Allah's protection and plan.
Hajar's Trust at Safa and Marwa
Hajar (wife of Ibrahim)
When Prophet Ibrahim left Hajar and baby Ismail in the barren valley of Makkah by Allah's command, Hajar asked if this was Allah's order. When Ibrahim confirmed it, she said, "Then Allah will not abandon us." When her water ran out, she ran between Safa and Marwa seven times searching for help, and Allah caused the well of Zamzam to spring forth.
Lesson: Tawakkul requires both acceptance of Allah's decree and taking action - Hajar trusted Allah while actively searching for water.
The Merchant's Trust
Abdur-Rahman ibn Awf
When Abdur-Rahman ibn Awf migrated to Madinah, he was offered half of his brother's wealth. He declined, saying, "Just show me where the marketplace is." He relied on Allah while using his skills in trade. Starting with almost nothing, his trust in Allah combined with hard work made him one of the wealthiest companions.
Lesson: Tawakkul does not mean being passive; it means working hard while trusting Allah for the results.
