The Path to Repentance
Tawbah (repentance) linguistically means "to return." In Islamic terminology, it refers to returning to Allah from disobedience to obedience, from heedlessness to remembrance, and from distance to closeness with the Creator.
“Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves.”
What is Tawbah?
Tawbah (repentance) linguistically means "to return." In Islamic terminology, it refers to returning to Allah from disobedience to obedience, from heedlessness to remembrance, and from distance to closeness with the Creator.
Repentance is obligatory upon every Muslim and is the path to salvation. Allah loves those who constantly turn to Him in repentance, and the door of tawbah remains open until the sun rises from the west or until the soul reaches the throat at death.
Conditions of Sincere Repentance
Sincere Regret (An-Nadam)
Feeling genuine remorse and sorrow for having committed the sin. This regret should come from recognizing that the act was displeasing to Allah, not merely from fear of worldly consequences. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Regret is repentance."
“And those who, when they commit an immorality or wrong themselves, remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins.”
Immediate Cessation (Al-Iqla)
Stopping the sinful act immediately and completely. One cannot claim to repent while still engaged in the sin. This requires firm resolve and may involve removing oneself from environments or situations that lead to the sin.
“And who do not persist in what they have done while they know.”
Firm Resolve Not to Return (Al-Azm)
Making a sincere intention and determination never to return to that sin again. This resolve should be genuine at the moment of repentance. If one later falls into the sin again due to weakness, they should repent again with renewed sincerity.
“O you who have believed, repent to Allah with sincere repentance.”
Restoring Rights (Radd al-Mazalim)
If the sin involved the rights of others (stealing, backbiting, physical harm, etc.), one must restore those rights or seek forgiveness from the wronged person. Wealth must be returned, honor must be defended, and forgiveness must be sought. If the person has passed away, one should give charity on their behalf and make dua for them.
“But if you repent, you may have your principal - thus you do no wrong, nor are you wronged.”
Major vs Minor Sins
Major sins (Kaba'ir) are those for which a specific punishment is mentioned in the Quran or Sunnah, or for which there is a curse or threat of the Fire. Minor sins (Sagha'ir) are lesser transgressions that can be expiated through good deeds, prayers, and avoiding major sins. However, persistence in minor sins can elevate them to major sins. As Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "There is no minor sin with persistence, and there is no major sin with seeking forgiveness."
Major Sins (Kaba'ir)
- •Shirk (associating partners with Allah)
- •Murder of an innocent soul
- •Sorcery and magic
- •Abandoning the obligatory prayers
- •Withholding Zakat
- •Not fasting Ramadan without valid excuse
- •Not performing Hajj when able
- •Disobedience and disrespect to parents
- •Cutting ties of kinship
- •Adultery and fornication
- And others mentioned in the Quran and Sunnah...
Minor Sins (Sagha'ir)
- •Looking at what is forbidden (without acting upon it)
- •Idle talk and vain speech
- •Minor lies that do not harm others
- •Excessive laughter
- •Minor instances of showing off
- •Small acts of wastefulness
Never Despair of Allah's Mercy
No matter how many sins you have committed or how great they are, never despair of Allah's mercy. His mercy encompasses all things, and His forgiveness is greater than any sin. The door of repentance is always open, and Allah loves when His servants turn back to Him. Every saint has a past, and every sinner has a future. What matters is that you return to Allah with a sincere heart.
“Say, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful."”
“Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves.”
“And it is He who accepts repentance from His servants and pardons misdeeds, and He knows what you do.”
Narrated by Anas ibn Malik
“Allah is more pleased with the repentance of His servant than one of you who finds his lost camel in a barren desert.”
Narrated by Abu Musa al-Ashari
“Allah, the Exalted, stretches out His Hand during the night so that the sinners of the day may repent, and He stretches out His Hand during the day so that the sinners of the night may repent, until the sun rises from the west.”
Narrated by Abu Hurairah
“If you did not commit sins, Allah would replace you with people who would commit sins and then seek forgiveness from Allah, and He would forgive them.”
Stories of Those Who Were Forgiven
The Man Who Killed 100 Souls
A man from the Children of Israel killed 99 people. He then asked a monk if there was any chance of repentance for him. The monk said no, so the man killed him too, making it 100. He then asked a scholar the same question. The scholar said, "Yes, and who can stand between you and repentance? Go to such-and-such land, for in it there are people who worship Allah. Worship Allah with them and do not return to your land, for it is a land of evil." The man set out, and when he was halfway there, death approached him. The angels of mercy and the angels of punishment disputed over him. Allah commanded the earth to shrink, bringing the righteous land closer to him. The angels of mercy took his soul because he was found to be closer to the land of the righteous by a hand span.
Lesson: No matter how great your sins, sincere repentance and the intention to change can lead to forgiveness. Allah looks at the heart and the sincere effort to change, even if one dies before completing the journey.

The Prostitute Who Gave Water to a Dog
A woman from the Children of Israel was a known prostitute. One day, she passed by a dog panting from thirst near a well. She removed her shoe, tied it with her head-cover, and drew water for the dog to drink. For this single act of mercy, Allah forgave all her sins.
Lesson: Allah's mercy is vast and can be triggered by sincere acts of kindness, even small ones. Never underestimate the value of a good deed, and never despair of Allah's forgiveness regardless of your past.

The Companion with Many Sins
A man came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have committed a great sin. Is there any repentance for me?" The Prophet asked, "Do you have a mother?" The man said no. The Prophet asked, "Do you have a maternal aunt?" The man said yes. The Prophet said, "Then be dutiful to her."
Lesson: Repentance is coupled with righteous deeds. Being good to relatives, especially mothers and maternal aunts, is one of the greatest acts that can help expiate sins and draw one closer to Allah's forgiveness.

The Man Who Clung to the Kaaba
A man came to Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) and said, "I killed a soul unjustly. Is there repentance for me?" Ibn Abbas asked, "Is your mother alive?" The man said no. Ibn Abbas then advised him to repent to Allah and draw close to Him as much as possible. When asked why he inquired about the man's mother, Ibn Abbas said, "I do not know of any deed closer to Allah than being dutiful to one's mother."
Lesson: The doors of good deeds are many, and they can serve as expiation for sins. Dutifulness to parents, charity, prayer, and other righteous acts combined with sincere repentance can lead to forgiveness.

Duas for Repentance
"O Allah, You are my Lord. There is no god but You. You created me and I am Your servant, and I am upon Your covenant and promise as much as I am able. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your favor upon me, and I acknowledge my sin, so forgive me, for indeed none forgives sins except You."
The master of seeking forgiveness (Sayyid al-Istighfar). Whoever says it during the day with firm belief and dies that day will be among the people of Paradise. Whoever says it during the night with firm belief and dies that night will be among the people of Paradise.
Sahih al-Bukhari 6306
"I seek forgiveness from Allah, the Magnificent, whom there is no god but He, the Living, the Self-Sustaining, and I repent to Him."
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever says this, Allah will forgive him even if he fled from the battlefield."
Sunan Abu Dawud 1517, Jami at-Tirmidhi 3577
La ilaha illa Anta, Subhanaka, inni kuntu min adh-dhalimin.
"There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers."
The supplication of Prophet Yunus (Jonah) when he was in the belly of the whale. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "No Muslim ever prays to his Lord with these words for anything but He will answer his prayer."
Quran 21:87, Jami at-Tirmidhi 3505
Rabbana dhalamna anfusana wa in lam taghfir lana wa tarhamna lanakoonanna minal-khasireen.
"Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers."
This was the supplication of Adam and Hawa (Eve) after they ate from the forbidden tree. It is a model of humility and acknowledgment of wrongdoing before Allah.
Quran 7:23
Astaghfirullah.
"I seek forgiveness from Allah."
The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to seek forgiveness from Allah more than 70 times a day. Saying this simple phrase abundantly throughout the day keeps the heart clean and connected to Allah.
Sahih al-Bukhari 6307
Rabbighfir li wa tub alayya innaka Antat-Tawwabur-Rahim.
"My Lord, forgive me and accept my repentance. Indeed, You are the Accepting of Repentance, the Merciful."
Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) said: "We used to count that the Messenger of Allah would say this in a single gathering 100 times."
Sunan Abu Dawud 1516, Jami at-Tirmidhi 3434
