"If I were to take a Khalil (intimate friend), I would have taken Abu Bakr."— Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Sahih al-Bukhari 3656)
Biography
Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (رضي الله عنه) was born in Makkah around 573 CE, two years after the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. His real name was Abdullah ibn Abi Quhafah, but he was known by his kunya Abu Bakr. He was a successful merchant known for his honesty and good character even before Islam.
Abu Bakr was the first adult male to accept Islam when the Prophet ﷺ began his mission. He immediately believed without any hesitation, earning him the title "as-Siddiq" (the Truthful). His faith was so strong that he spent his entire wealth for the sake of Islam, freeing many slaves including Bilal ibn Rabah.
He was the Prophet's ﷺ closest companion and accompanied him during the Hijrah (migration) to Madinah, hiding with him in the Cave of Thawr. The Quran mentions this moment: "...when they were in the cave, when he said to his companion, 'Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us.'" (9:40)
After the Prophet's ﷺ death, Abu Bakr became the first Caliph (632-634 CE). During his brief but impactful rule, he compiled the Quran into a single book, fought the Wars of Apostasy (Ridda Wars), and began the expansion of the Islamic state. He passed away in 634 CE at the age of 63 and is buried next to the Prophet ﷺ in Madinah.
