Prophetic Medicine

الطب النبوي

The Prophet ﷺ used natural remedies like honey, black seed, and cupping, emphasizing that Allah has created a cure for every disease.

Context

Practical guidance given throughout the Madinan period when the Muslim community needed health guidance

The Narrative
The Prophet ﷺ emphasized that every disease has a cure except old age and death. He said: "There is no disease that Allah has created, except that He also has created its remedy." This fundamental principle encouraged Muslims to seek treatment while maintaining trust in Allah. Honey held a special place in Prophetic medicine. When a man came complaining that his brother had stomach trouble, the Prophet advised him to give his brother honey. The man returned saying it had not helped, and the Prophet told him to give more honey. After the third time, the man's brother was cured. The Prophet remarked that Allah had spoken the truth (in the Quran about honey's healing properties) while the man's stomach had lied. Black seed (Nigella sativa) was highly recommended by the Prophet, who said: "In black seed there is healing for every disease except death." He would use it for various ailments, and modern research has validated many of its medicinal properties including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immune-boosting effects. Cupping (hijama) was a regular practice of the Prophet ﷺ. He used it for various conditions and said: "Healing is in three things: in the incision of the cupper, in drinking honey, and in cauterizing with fire, but I forbid my Ummah from cauterization." The Prophet would perform cupping on specific days and specific points of the body. The Prophet also recognized the importance of psychological well-being. He would visit the sick, make dua for them, and encourage others to do so. He taught that visiting the sick removes sins and that the angels pray for those who do so. He combined physical remedies with spiritual healing, often making supplications like: "O Allah, Lord of mankind, remove the harm and heal him, for You are the Healer. There is no healing except Your healing, a healing that leaves no sickness." Prevention was emphasized alongside cure. The Prophet taught quarantine procedures 1,400 years before modern medicine: "If you hear of a plague in a land, do not enter it; and if it breaks out in a land where you are, do not leave it." This shows the sophisticated understanding of contagion and public health in Islamic teachings.
