Prophetic Guidance
Narrated by Umar ibn al-Khattab
الإِحْسَانُ أَنْ تَعْبُدَ اللَّهَ كَأَنَّكَ تَرَاهُ، فَإِنْ لَمْ تَكُنْ تَرَاهُ فَإِنَّهُ يَرَاكَ
“Ihsan is to worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you cannot see Him, then indeed He sees you.”
Narrated by Shaddad ibn Aws
“Allah has prescribed ihsan (excellence) in all things. So if you kill, kill well; and if you slaughter, slaughter well. Let each one of you sharpen his blade and let him spare suffering to the animal he slaughters.”
Narrated by Aisha
إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ إِذَا عَمِلَ أَحَدُكُمْ عَمَلاً أَنْ يُتْقِنَهُ
“Allah loves that when one of you does a job, he does it with itqan (excellence/perfection).”
Exemplary Stories
Excellence in Every Deed
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
The Prophet ﷺ exemplified ihsan in everything he did. His prayer was described as being so focused that he seemed to be conversing directly with Allah. His kindness extended to animals - he forbade hitting them on the face and overloading them. He would even straighten a brick that was out of place in a wall. When performing ablution, he did so perfectly. This attention to excellence in every matter, big or small, was his constant way.
Lesson: Ihsan is not reserved for "important" matters - excellence should characterize every action, no matter how small.
The Well Digger
A Companion of the Prophet ﷺ
A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said he wanted to do a good deed. The Prophet ﷺ told him to dig a well for the people. The man could have dug a shallow well and been done, but he dug deep, ensured the water was clean, built proper walls, and made it accessible. Years later, the well still served travelers. When asked why he put in such effort, he said, "I remembered that Allah sees me even if people do not."
Lesson: Ihsan means doing work with excellence even when no one is watching, because Allah always sees.
Excellence in Craftsmanship
Muslim Architects and Scholars
The mosques, madrasas, and cities built by Muslims throughout history - from the Alhambra to the great mosques of Istanbul - reflect the principle of ihsan. Muslim scholars would spend decades perfecting a single work of scholarship, checking and rechecking for accuracy. Calligraphers would practice for years before writing Quran. This tradition of excellence stemmed from understanding that their work was an act of worship.
Lesson: The great achievements of Islamic civilization were built on the foundation of ihsan - pursuing excellence as an act of worship.
Practical Ways to Develop Excellence
- 1Before any act of worship, remind yourself that Allah is watching - pray with full presence and focus
- 2Apply the standard "Would I be satisfied if this were presented to Allah?" to every task you do
- 3Take time to do things properly rather than rushing through tasks carelessly
- 4In dealings with people, go beyond what is required - return good for evil, forgive those who wrong you
- 5Maintain excellence even when tired, when alone, or when no one will notice
- 6Continually seek to improve your skills and knowledge in your profession as an act of worship
- 7Treat animals and the environment with care and consideration, avoiding waste and harm
