Prophetic Guidance

Sahih al-Bukhari#6094Sahih

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Masud

Truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise. A man continues to tell the truth until he is recorded with Allah as a truthful person. Lying leads to wickedness, and wickedness leads to the Fire. A man continues to lie until he is recorded with Allah as a liar.

Jami at-Tirmidhi#2518Sahih

Narrated by Hasan ibn Ali

Leave what makes you doubt for what does not make you doubt. Truth brings tranquility and falsehood brings doubt.

Sunan Abu Dawud#4971Sahih

Narrated by Sufyan ibn Asid

It is a great treachery to tell your brother something he believes to be true while you are lying to him.

Exemplary Stories

1

Al-Siddiq

Abu Bakr al-Siddiq

When the Prophet ﷺ told the Quraysh about the Night Journey (Isra and Miraj), they rushed to Abu Bakr thinking he would doubt such an incredible claim. Abu Bakr immediately said, "If he said it, then it is true. I believe him about news from the heavens in the mornings and evenings, so how could I not believe him about this?" His unwavering truthfulness and belief in truth earned him the title "Al-Siddiq" (The Truthful One).

Lesson: True sidq means believing and speaking truth even when it seems impossible to others, because truth comes from the truthful.

2

The Honest Trader

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (before Prophethood)

Before prophethood, Muhammad ﷺ was known throughout Makkah as "Al-Amin" (The Trustworthy) and "Al-Sadiq" (The Truthful). People would entrust their valuables to him for safekeeping. Even his enemies acknowledged his honesty. Khadijah hired him to manage her trade specifically because of his renowned truthfulness, and this honest character prepared him for the trust of prophethood.

Lesson: A reputation for truthfulness is built over time through consistent honesty in every interaction, whether large or small.

3

Truth in Difficulty

Ka'b ibn Malik

Ka'b was one of three companions who failed to join the Tabuk expedition without valid excuse. When the Prophet ﷺ returned, others made excuses, but Ka'b told the complete truth: he had no excuse except negligence. The Prophet ﷺ accepted this and told Ka'b to wait for Allah's judgment. For fifty days, he was boycotted by the entire community. Finally, Allah revealed his forgiveness in the Quran. His truthfulness, though painful, saved him.

Lesson: Speaking truth even when it is against yourself, even when a lie would be easier, ultimately leads to salvation and honor.
