Biography

Ali ibn Abi Talib (رضي الله عنه) was born around 600 CE in Makkah, inside the Kaaba according to many narrations. He was the cousin of the Prophet ﷺ and was raised in his household from a young age when his father Abu Talib faced financial difficulties.

Ali was the first youth to accept Islam, embracing it at around 10 years old when the Prophet ﷺ began his mission. On the night of the Hijrah, he bravely slept in the Prophet's ﷺ bed to fool the Quraysh assassins, risking his own life.

He married Fatimah (رضي الله عنها), the beloved daughter of the Prophet ﷺ, and from their union came Hasan and Husayn, the leaders of the youth of Paradise. The Prophet ﷺ said about Ali, "I am the city of knowledge and Ali is its gate."

Ali was known as "Asadullah" (Lion of Allah) for his unmatched bravery in battle. He was the standard-bearer at Badr, Uhud, and Khandaq, and he conquered Khaybar single-handedly when he removed a massive fortress gate.

As the fourth Caliph (656-661 CE), Ali faced significant internal challenges. Despite the trials, he is remembered for his justice, wisdom, knowledge, and eloquence. His sermons and letters, compiled in Nahj al-Balagha, are considered masterpieces of Arabic literature.

Ali was martyred in 661 CE in Kufa when struck by a poisoned sword during Fajr prayer. He is buried in Najaf, Iraq.
