Biography

Uthman ibn Affan (رضي الله عنه) was born around 576 CE into the wealthy Umayyad clan of the Quraysh. He was known for his modesty, generosity, and shy nature. He was one of the wealthiest merchants in Makkah and was highly respected for his honesty in business.

Uthman was among the earliest Muslims, accepting Islam through the invitation of Abu Bakr. He earned the unique title "Dhun-Nurayn" (Possessor of Two Lights) because he married two daughters of the Prophet ﷺ - first Ruqayyah, and after her death, Umm Kulthum. No other person in history has married two daughters of a Prophet.

His generosity was legendary. He equipped the entire Muslim army for the expedition of Tabuk, bought a well and made it free for all Muslims (Bi'r Ruma), and expanded the Prophet's Mosque in Madinah. The Prophet ﷺ said about him, "Whatever Uthman does after this day will not harm him," after his great sacrifice for the expedition of Tabuk.

As the third Caliph (644-656 CE), Uthman's most significant achievement was the standardization of the Quran into a single authorized text, ensuring its preservation for all time. The Islamic empire continued to expand during his rule, and he established the first Muslim navy.

Uthman was martyred in his home in 656 CE while reading the Quran, during a period of civil strife. He was about 82 years old and is buried in Jannatul Baqi in Madinah.
