Biography

Khadijah bint Khuwaylid (رضي الله عنها) was born around 555 CE in Makkah into a noble Qurayshi family. She was a successful businesswoman, highly respected for her intelligence, wisdom, and noble character. She was known as "At-Tahirah" (The Pure One) even before Islam.

Khadijah hired the young Muhammad ﷺ to manage her trade caravan. Impressed by his honesty and trustworthiness (known as "Al-Amin"), she proposed marriage to him through an intermediary. Despite being older and having many suitors, she chose him. They married when she was about 40 and he was 25.

When the Prophet ﷺ received the first revelation in the Cave of Hira and came home trembling, Khadijah was the first to comfort him and the first person to accept Islam. She said the famous words: "Never! By Allah, Allah will never disgrace you. You maintain family ties, bear the burdens of the weak, help the poor, honor guests, and assist those afflicted by calamity."

Throughout the years of persecution in Makkah, including three years of social boycott in Shi'b Abi Talib, Khadijah stood firmly by the Prophet ﷺ, supporting him emotionally and financially. She spent all her wealth for the cause of Islam.

Khadijah passed away in 619 CE, in what became known as the "Year of Sorrow" (Am al-Huzn), the same year as Abu Talib's death. The Prophet ﷺ never forgot her, and Angel Jibreel brought her glad tidings of a palace in Paradise. She was the mother of all the Prophet's ﷺ children who survived to adulthood, including Fatimah.
