Treatment of Otherselderly

Respect for the Elderly

احترام كبار السن

The Prophet ﷺ taught that honoring the elderly is part of honoring Allah, showing them special respect and care.

Context

Throughout his life, modeled in interactions with elderly companions like Abu Bakr, Abu Quhafa, and others

The Narrative
"Honoring the white-haired Muslim is from the glorification of Allah," the Prophet ﷺ taught, establishing respect for elders as a religious obligation. He demonstrated this through his own interactions with elderly companions and community members. The Prophet would give precedence to the elderly in speaking, eating, and other matters. When dates or food were brought, he would begin serving from the oldest person present. He taught: "He is not one of us who does not show mercy to our young ones and respect to our elders." This principle created a culture where age was honored rather than dismissed or hidden. Abu Bakr al-Siddiq's father, Abu Quhafa, accepted Islam on the day of the Conquest of Makkah when he was very old with completely white hair. When Abu Bakr brought him to the Prophet, the Prophet said: "Why did you not leave the elderly man in his house so I could have come to him?" This showed the Prophet's view that the elderly should be spared difficulty and that others should go to them, not the reverse. The Prophet taught specific etiquette for interacting with elders. Young people should not speak before the elderly in gatherings, should not walk ahead of them, and should stand when they enter. When the Prophet himself would meet an elderly person, he would be the first to extend greetings and would honor them with his full attention.
