Compassion for the Poor

الرحمة بالفقراء

The Prophet ﷺ showed exceptional care for the poor, often giving away everything he had and sitting with them as equals.

Context

Throughout his life, but especially prominent during the Madinan period when a diverse community formed

The Narrative
The Prophet ﷺ never turned away anyone in need. He would give away everything he had, even when his own family went hungry. Aisha reported that the Prophet never saved anything for the next day - whatever came to him in the evening, he would distribute before morning, and whatever came in the morning, he would distribute before evening. The people of Suffah (Ahl al-Suffah) held a special place in the Prophet's care. These were poor companions who had no family or home in Madinah and lived on a raised platform attached to the Prophet's mosque. The Prophet would regularly check on them, share meals with them, and ensure they had their basic needs met. He would sometimes invite groups of them to different companions' homes for meals, taking responsibility for their care and ensuring the community supported them. The Prophet's treatment of the poor showed complete equality. He would sit with them, eat with them, and never show any sign of superiority. When a delegation came to meet him, they found him sitting among his companions with no distinguishing mark or throne. They had to ask, "Which one of you is Muhammad?" This humility despite his position as the leader of the Muslim community and the final Prophet was extraordinary. He taught that feeding the hungry is among the highest acts of charity. When asked "What Islam is best?" he replied: "Feeding the hungry and greeting with peace those you know and those you don't know." He established the practice of giving sadaqah and encouraged those with means to support those without. The Prophet would make dua to remain among the poor and be resurrected among them. He said: "O Allah, give me life as a poor person, cause me to die as a poor person, and resurrect me among the poor." When asked why, he explained that the poor would enter Paradise before the rich by 500 years. This wasn't a condemnation of wealth but an emphasis on detachment from worldly possessions and the spiritual dangers of materialism.
