Service to the Needy

خدمة المحتاجين

The Prophet ﷺ actively helped those in need, solving their problems and teaching that serving others is beloved to Allah.

Context

Throughout the Madinan period, as the Muslim community established social welfare systems

The Narrative
"The most beloved people to Allah are those who are most beneficial to people," the Prophet ﷺ taught. He didn't just preach service to those in need - he embodied it through constant action to help others solve their problems. A poor man came to the Prophet asking for charity. The Prophet had nothing to give at that moment, but instead of sending him away, he asked: "Do you have anything at home?" The man said he had only a cloth, half of which he wore and half he used as a mat. The Prophet told him to bring it, then held it up in the mosque and asked: "Who will buy this?" Someone offered two dirhams. The Prophet gave the money to the man and said: "Buy food with one dirham and give it to your family. Buy an axe with the other." When the man returned with the axe, the Prophet attached a handle to it himself and told him: "Go gather firewood and sell it. I do not want to see you for fifteen days." The man did so, and when he returned, he had earned ten dirhams. Widows and orphans received special attention. The Prophet said: "The one who cares for widows and the poor is like the one who fights in the way of Allah, or like the one who stands in prayer at night and fasts during the day." He himself would visit widows, help with their needs, and ensure the community supported them. The Prophet's door was always open to those in need. He would interrupt his own meals to help someone, would give his time freely, and would never turn away someone seeking assistance.
